Japan and Vietnam expand economic ties through high-tech cooperation
Japan and Vietnam are deepening economic ties through increased local-level cooperation and strategic partnerships. In Can Tho City, located in the Mekong Delta, Japanese investment has exceeded $1.6 billion, focusing on manufacturing, information technology, electronic equipment, and energy.
Nationwide, Japanese investment in Vietnam reached approximately $80.3 billion by July 2026, making Japan the third-largest investor in the country. In Ho Chi Minh City, Japanese projects totaled over $15 billion as of late 2025.
During the Vietnam-Japan Local Cooperation Forum, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized the need to leverage science, technology, and innovation. Key areas for future collaboration include artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum technology, satellite technology, smart cities, and sustainable agriculture. The forum aims to foster an environment for high-quality growth and digital transformation through joint research and development centers and startup incubators.
