Japan anime market projected to exceed 4 trillion yen

The Japanese anime market is projected to potentially exceed 4 trillion yen, according to data discussed by the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA). While the 2024 market reached 3.84 trillion yen—driven largely by a 26% surge in overseas sales—the industry is now monitoring the impact of a strengthening yen. A recent shift toward a stronger yen may reduce the currency-driven boost that previously inflated overseas revenue figures.

Major industry players show varied performance. Sony’s Aniplex reported a significant 45% revenue increase to 211.5 billion yen, bolstered by the success of the ‘Demon Slayer’ film sequels. Conversely, Toho’s animation business saw a 15% decline, and Kadokawa’s animation and live-action segment decreased by 5%.

In addition to market trends, the AJA has announced ‘TOKYO ANIME NEXT,’ an event scheduled for late October and early November 2026 in Tokyo. The event will feature screenings, workshops, and a main program including live orchestral performances of themes from ‘Demon Slayer,’ ‘Attack on Titan,’ and ‘Detective Conan.’ The festivities will also serve as a precursor to a new anime awards concept planned for 2027.
