Japan anticipates nearly 1,900 food price hikes in August

A recent survey of 195 major Japanese food and beverage manufacturers predicts that about 1,898 food items will see price increases in August, with the number of items rising to over 3,000 in September and an estimated 20,000 items expected to rise over the full year. The hikes are driven by higher raw‑material costs, rising logistics and packaging expenses, and a weaker yen that raises import prices. Core consumer price index (CPI) data for June showed a 1.6% year‑on‑year rise, marking the 58th consecutive month of increase. Industry executives warn that higher prices could suppress sales volumes, prompting some manufacturers to reduce package sizes and highlighting the growing role of private‑label products as cheaper alternatives.
