Tokyo and Kanagawa Thieves Arrested in Multi‑Location Theft Spree

Police in Tokyo arrested 42‑year‑old Kappei Iwai and 36‑year‑old Kazuki Miura on suspicion of multiple thefts. The pair broke into a training gym in Minato around 03:40 a.m. on 18 May, stealing cash, bags and a laptop, then moved to Shinjuku where they smashed car windows and stole smartphones and sunglasses worth about ¥2 million.

The Metropolitan Police say similar crimes have been identified in Kanagawa, with roughly 20 incidents totalling an estimated ¥3 million in losses. Investigators are also probing connections to a series of over‑100 thefts reported in Osaka, based on Iwai’s own statements. The two suspects are believed to have met through drug‑deal contacts; Iwai acted as the “executor” while Miura served as a lookout. Both remain silent on the charges.

Authorities are continuing to investigate possible additional offences and the distribution of stolen items.
