Japan authorities warn of scams targeting disaster relief efforts

Authorities in Japan are issuing warnings regarding fraudulent activities targeting disaster victims. The National Consumer Affairs Center has highlighted a rise in social media scams where bad actors use direct messages to solicit donations or purchases under the guise of disaster relief. These scams often involve impersonating familiar stores or organizations and directing users to fraudulent links to facilitate payments via code-based mobile services.

In Kumamoto Prefecture, officials are urging residents to remain cautious of predatory business practices. Drawing on experiences from the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, the prefecture noted that scammers often promise free repairs by claiming government subsidies or insurance coverage can be used. Some individuals also pose as government officials to solicit donations. Authorities advise citizens to avoid signing contracts on the spot, to obtain multiple estimates for repairs, and to verify all relief activities through official websites.
