Japan authorities warn of scams targeting Kumamoto Earthquake relief efforts

Authorities in Japan are warning the public about various fraudulent schemes targeting individuals' desire to support victims of the Kumamoto Earthquake. These scams manifest through multiple channels, including door-to-door visits, telephone calls, and social media.

In some instances, scammers pose as municipal officials or representatives of disaster relief organizations to solicit cash donations or small items like towels. On social media, more sophisticated ‘task scams’ have emerged. In these cases, victims receive direct messages from accounts—sometimes hijacked from legitimate businesses—promising that purchasing products will support disaster areas while also providing a cash-back profit.

The National Consumer Affairs Center of Japan noted that scammers often use small, initial payouts to build trust before inducing victims to transfer much larger sums. Police advise citizens to verify bank account names against official information released by news outlets and to remain skeptical of any offer that promises financial gain through charitable donations.
