Japan baseball roster announced as Nippon-Ham focuses on pitching

The roster for the Japanese national baseball team, led by manager Motohito Iguchi, has been announced. The coaching staff includes hitting coach Shoji Taguchi and pitching coaches Akifumi Otsuka and Shinji Kurano. The player lineup features several pitchers such as Hiroto Takahashi and Yumeto Kanamaru, alongside infielders like Rui Sooyama. Some players, including Tomoya Masaki and Koki Yamaguchi, have been designated as overage (OA) players.

In professional baseball news, the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters are evaluating their strategy for the upcoming 2026 draft. Following a season where the team's ERA rose from 2.53 to 3.38, analysts suggest that prioritizing pitcher recruitment is essential to compete with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks. While the 2025 draft focused heavily on position players, the team's recent increase in runs allowed indicates a pressing need to rebuild the pitching staff.
