Japan bear activity prompts DNA monitoring and emergency responses

Authorities in Japan are implementing new measures and responding to incidents following increased bear activity in several regions. In Iwaki, officials released the first results of an environmental DNA study conducted on river water to monitor bear movement. Testing at five locations in the Yotsukura and Okū districts showed no bear DNA was detected, suggesting no bear presence within the previous 24 hours upstream. This initiative uses technology from Fish Path to track incursions up to 1 km from sampling points.

In Miyagi Prefecture, a bear caused significant disruption in Shiogama City during a holiday weekend. After being spotted in a residential area, a bear approximately one meter long fled onto a fishing vessel. The animal remained on the boat before jumping into the sea around 1:00 AM. While three people were on the vessel, they remained safe inside a locked cabin. Additionally, in Iwanuma City, a bear collided with a train on the Joban Line, causing service delays and suspensions.

Local authorities continue to monitor sightings and coordinate with hunting associations to ensure resident safety.
