Japan becomes India's top FDI source with $5.71 billion in Q1

Japan has emerged as the largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India during the first quarter of the 2026-27 fiscal year (April–June). According to government data, Japan contributed $5.71 billion in equity inflows, accounting for approximately 29% of India's total quarterly equity FDI of $19.81 billion.

This quarterly figure significantly exceeds the total Japanese investment of $3.74 billion recorded during the entire previous fiscal year. The surge reflects a strategic shift as Japanese companies and financial institutions seek to diversify supply chains and mitigate risks related to geopolitical tensions, manufacturing costs, and tariffs.

Beyond traditional sectors like automotive manufacturing, engineering, and electronics—led by companies such as Suzuki, Toyota, Honda, Hitachi, and Mitsubishi—investment is expanding into banking, financial services, digital infrastructure, technology, and renewable energy. Moving forward, cooperation is expected to intensify in high-tech sectors including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, critical minerals, and next-generation mobility.
