Japan bicycle helmet market targets appearance concerns to boost usage

Companies and authorities in Japan are addressing low bicycle helmet usage rates by focusing on consumer design preferences and public awareness.

Muji (Ryohin Keikaku) has launched a ‘Wind-Passing Bicycle Helmet’ priced at 4,990 yen. Developed in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police Department and academic institutions, the design aims to reduce heat and prevent hair from being disheveled. The product features a ventilated structure and a magnetic buckle for easy one-handed use.

Simultaneously, a survey by Tanizawa Seisakusho highlights that while awareness of helmet regulations is high, actual usage remains low. Approximately 46.9% of regular cyclists have never worn a helmet. A significant barrier is the concern over appearance in social settings; 60.2% of respondents, and 71% of women, cited social interactions as a reason to avoid helmets. In response, Tanizawa Seisakusho developed the ‘Liaura’ helmet, which includes features like a ‘bang pocket’ to protect hairstyles.

On a local level, the Daisen Police Station in Akita Prefecture has begun distributing helmets to monitors to gather feedback and promote safety awareness.
