Japan business conditions improve for fourth consecutive month
Japan's domestic business conditions improved for the fourth consecutive month in August 2026, according to the Teikoku Databank Business Conditions Index. The index rose by 1.0 point to 44.6.
Growth was primarily driven by increased demand for AI and semiconductors, alongside seasonal consumer spending related to summer holidays and travel. The manufacturing sector saw significant strength, particularly in electrical machinery and transport equipment, bolstered by orders for AI data centers and automotive components. Other improving sectors included transportation, warehousing, retail, and services.
Despite the upward trend, several challenges persist, including high procurement costs, labor shortages, and concerns regarding natural disasters. While the outlook suggests a moderate improvement supported by fiscal policy and reconstruction efforts following the Kumamoto earthquake, risks such as rising oil prices due to Middle East tensions and increasing long-term interest rates remain.
