Japan celebrates cultural heritage and historical anniversaries

Japan observes several cultural and historical anniversaries throughout late October. On October 27, the country marks Reading Day (Dokusho no Hi) and Written Culture Day (Moji Katsuji Bunka no Hi). The former initiates the 80th Reading Week, a national campaign to promote literacy, while the latter is legally recognized to honor the importance of books, newspapers, and printed media in society.

On October 28, the nation commemorates Panda Day, marking the 1972 arrival of giant pandas Kang Kang and Lan Lan from China to the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo. This event served as a symbol of friendship following the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Additionally, Gunma Prefecture celebrates its regional identity and history, a tradition established in 1985 to honor its administrative formation during the Meiji period.
