Japan centenarian population exceeds 100,000

Japan's population of centenarians has surpassed 100,000, reaching 107,677 according to data from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. This milestone represents an increase of nearly 8,000 people compared to the previous year.

Women make up 88% of this demographic. Experts suggest this disparity is due to historical factors, including higher male mortality during World War II, lifestyle differences such as smoking and drinking habits, and the tendency for women to remain more socially active in their later years.

The surge in elderly citizens highlights Japan's broader demographic challenges, including a shrinking workforce and one of the world's lowest birth rates. While the government aims to strengthen social security systems to support healthy aging, the nation faces a 'silent emergency' as the population is projected to decline significantly by 2070.
