Japan-China diplomatic row over alleged foreign ministers' meeting at ASEAN summit

Japan's foreign minister Toshimitsu Motegi said he briefly discussed bilateral relations with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi when they ran into each other at the ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting in Manila. By contrast, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, stated that Wang Yi had neither a scheduled meeting nor any brief exchange with the Japanese side at the venue.

The conflicting accounts illustrate the sharp deterioration in Japan‑China ties since November, when Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s remarks on Taiwan angered Beijing. The dispute has spilled over into the economy, with a reported decline in Chinese tourists visiting Japan, and both governments continue to emphasize openness to dialogue and regional peace responsibilities.
