Japan cities host events for International Day of Sign Languages

In observance of the International Day of Sign Languages on September 23, various awareness initiatives are being held across the Kansai region of Japan to promote sign language as a legitimate language and foster an inclusive society.

In Nagaokakyo, Kyoto Prefecture, the city hall is hosting an exhibition featuring videos that advocate for the recognition of sign language. This event aims to deepen public understanding and respect for sign language as a distinct form of communication.

In Kawanishi, Hyogo Prefecture, the city is organizing several events, including a blue light-up at the Chimei Lake campsite and city hall to honor the international symbol color for the day. Additional activities include a “Sign Language Festival” hosted by the Kawanishi Deaf Association, exhibitions of sign language laws and greetings at the city hall, and a book display regarding hearing impairments at the central library.
