Japan conducts various disaster preparedness drills and safety initiatives

Various disaster preparedness activities and training exercises are being conducted across Japan. In Tsuruoka City, the Tsuruoka City Fire Department and Tsuruoka Police Station held their first joint training session simulating heavy rain and inland flooding. The exercise involved using rubber boats to search for residents in flooded residential areas and coordinating rescue transfers between agencies.

In Sakai City, approximately 15,000 residents participated in an earthquake evacuation drill simulating a magnitude 7 earthquake centered off the Sea of Japan. Participants practiced setting up evacuation shelters and learned how to use emergency equipment, such as cardboard beds and portable toilets.

In the realm of disaster supplies, Master Lock Sentry Japan’s “JTW123GEL” fireproof and waterproof safe won the Grand Prize in the disaster goods category of the 2026 Disaster Goods Awards. The concept, termed “escape-first disaster prevention,” encourages users to store essential documents and valuables in a secure, durable safe so they can prioritize immediate evacuation without attempting to retrieve items during an emergency.
