Japan conducts emergency bear hunting drills in Shizuoka and Shiga
Local authorities in Japan are conducting emergency training exercises to prepare for bear sightings in residential areas. These drills, organized as part of a national initiative by the Ministry of the Environment, aim to ensure that municipalities can execute rapid and safe culling procedures when necessary.
In Fujinomiya, Shizuoka Prefecture, approximately 100 participants—including municipal officials, police, and hunting associations—practiced procedures for road closures and managing ricocheting bullets. The exercise involved shooting at bear-shaped panels from the back of vehicles.
In Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, a similar drill was held involving about 30 participants. This specific training simulated a scenario where a bear had barricaded itself inside a nursery school, focusing on the speed and safety of the response to protect residents.
