Saga Prefecture conducts large-scale nuclear disaster drill

Saga Prefecture conducted a large-scale nuclear disaster prevention drill involving approximately 31,800 participants. The exercise simulated a major accident at the Genkai Nuclear Power Plant caused by a magnitude 6-lower earthquake.

Key components of the drill included the use of Japan Self-Defense Forces Osprey aircraft to transport personnel to an off-site center in Karatsu. To address potential communication failures, a “shipboard base station” was established on a Maritime Safety Agency vessel, with KDDI and other companies testing satellite equipment to ensure connectivity for isolated areas.

The drill also focused on social considerations, including evacuation procedures for foreign residents and providing meals that respect religious dietary restrictions, such as avoiding pork and alcohol for Muslim participants.
