Japan considers acquiring nuclear-powered submarines

Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi has stated that the government will not rule out the possibility of acquiring nuclear-powered submarines. This shift in rhetoric suggests a long-term strategic calculation to enhance Japan's maritime deterrence and operational reach in the Western Pacific.

Koizumi emphasized that discussing nuclear capabilities and submarines should not be considered a taboo, given the increasing severity of the regional security environment. He cited the rapid expansion of China's nuclear arsenal, North Korea's missile advancements, and Russia's nuclear threats as primary drivers for reconsidering Japan's traditional non-nuclear principles.

While Japan possesses advanced shipbuilding technology, the transition to nuclear propulsion would require significant developments in naval nuclear propulsion systems, specialized personnel, and maintenance infrastructure. The move could potentially trigger a regional arms race, impacting the security postures of China, South Korea, and the United States.
