Japan considers new agency to support retired SDF members

Japan's Defense Ministry is considering the establishment of a dedicated agency to support retired Self-Defense Forces (SDF) members and their families, potentially as early as fiscal 2027. The initiative, championed by Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, aims to create a “one-stop” center to centralize services that are currently divided among various ministry departments.

The proposed agency would provide a wide range of assistance, including job placement in cooperation with the private sector, medical services, mental health support, and educational assistance for family members. It also seeks to improve the social standing of veterans and assist wounded personnel with reintegration into society.

By enhancing post-retirement support, the ministry intends to address chronic personnel shortages within the SDF. The ministry plans to submit related legislation to the Diet during the ordinary session scheduled for next January and hopes to include the necessary expenses in its fiscal 2027 budget request.
