Japan considers including railway development in defense spending

The Japanese government is considering expanding the scope of defense-related spending to include the maintenance and development of railway infrastructure. This move aims to secure essential logistics routes for the supply of materials to the Self-Defense Forces and the transport of defense equipment during emergencies, thereby enhancing the nation's ability to sustain combat operations.

Proposals to include railway development are expected to be incorporated into the three major security-related documents scheduled for revision by the end of the year. Currently, public infrastructure spending within the defense budget focuses primarily on maritime ports and airports. If approved, this expansion could involve maintaining low-demand lines, implementing double-tracking, and widening tunnels to accommodate military equipment.

Additionally, officials are reportedly considering a new method for calculating the defense spending ratio. Rather than focusing solely on traditional military costs, they may calculate it based on total security-related expenditures, which would encompass economic security initiatives such as artificial intelligence development, space utilization, and energy supply network construction.
