Japan consumer prices rise 1.9% amid growing household expenditure burdens

Japan's consumer price index rose by 1.9% year-on-year in July 2026, according to data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. Excluding fresh food, the index increased by 1.8%. Inflationary pressures are being driven by a combination of demand, costs, and import prices, with the Bank of Japan noting that the yen's depreciation significantly amplifies the cost of imported goods.

A survey by MyVoiceCom reveals the domestic impact of these rising costs, with approximately 75% of respondents reporting a significant burden on their daily expenditures over the past year. Food and beverages are the most affected categories, cited by nearly 90% of participants.

In response to price hikes, consumers are adjusting their purchasing habits, such as switching to cheaper brands, buying in bulk during sales, or utilizing discount coupons. When faced with price increases, over 40% of respondents indicated they would more readily accept smaller increments in price, while over 30% preferred price stability through the simplification of packaging and containers.
