Japan consumer trends: Balancing grocery savings with time and waste
Recent consumer surveys in Japan highlight how households balance price savings against time costs and food waste when grocery shopping.
Regarding bulk purchasing, data suggests that buying large quantities from retailers like Costco may not always result in savings. While unit prices are often lower, the risk of food waste in smaller households can negate these benefits. For example, if a significant portion of a bulk meat purchase is discarded due to expiration, the effective price per 100 grams can become higher than that of smaller packs purchased at standard supermarkets.
Additionally, a study by NilCraft regarding shopping efficiency shows that consumers increasingly weigh travel time against potential savings. While 74.5% of respondents would travel an extra 10 minutes for a saving of less than 500 yen, this willingness drops to 42.1% when the travel time increases to 40 minutes. The research indicates that as travel time or total shopping volume increases, consumers demand higher savings to justify the time investment.
