Japan consumption tax reduction debates spark political friction

In the Ehime Prefectural Assembly, Katsuhiko Tanaka of the Japanese Communist Party proposed a petition to reduce the consumption tax to a flat 5% and abolish the invoice system. Tanaka argued that the Takaichi administration’s plan to temporarily reduce the tax on food items to 1% is insufficient, noting that over 70% of consumer price index items have seen increases. He suggested that a flat 5% reduction would be 2.4 times more effective for two-person working households than the proposed food tax cut. However, the petition was rejected by members of the LDP, Ishin, Komeito, and the Democratic Party for the People.

Simultaneously, the Democratic Party for the People has faced criticism regarding its handling of consumption tax reduction legislation. Social media reactions and party members have expressed frustration over the party’s decision to refuse deliberations, with some accusing the leadership of prioritizing political maneuvering over addressing the cost of living. Critics and some party supporters have called for more constructive debate in the Diet rather than using refusal of deliberation as a political tactic.
