Japan corporate earnings surge to record 21 trillion yen

Japanese companies have reported their largest earnings beat in five years, signaling a potential broadening of the nation’s equity rally beyond the technology and artificial intelligence sectors. Data shows that 71 per cent of local firms exceeded analyst forecasts for the three months ended June, with the 500 largest companies reporting an aggregate net income of 21 trillion yen (US$132 billion), surpassing the previous record of 18 trillion yen set a year ago.

This growth is increasingly driven by domestic-demand companies that have successfully utilized pricing power to pass higher costs, including rising oil prices, onto customers. Consequently, Topix companies are projected to achieve record profit margins of 9.3 per cent, the highest level since comparable data collection began over three decades ago. Analysts note that while previous gains were concentrated in semiconductor and AI-related trades, the current trend suggests a more resilient market as profitability improves across a wider range of sectors.
