Japan's Defense Minister to visit Australia and India for defense talks

Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi is scheduled to visit Australia and India from August 17 to 21 to discuss weapons supply and joint research and development.

In Australia, discussions will focus on the acquisition of Mogami-class frigates. Australia has decided to purchase these vessels for its navy in a project valued at approximately $6.4 billion. The first three ships will be constructed in Japan, while subsequent vessels will be built in Australia using Japanese technology. New Zealand has also expressed interest in the frigate program.

In India, Koizumi is expected to meet with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on August 20. The talks are anticipated to cover expanding defense industry cooperation, joint drone development, and the possibility of holding a 2+2 foreign and defense ministers' meeting within the year. This follows a recent co-development agreement between the two nations regarding the UNICORN naval radio antenna system.
