Japan Defense Minister Koizumi calls for debate on non-nuclear principles
Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi has called for an open and frank debate regarding the nation’s Three Non-Nuclear Principles. These principles, established in 1967, commit Japan to not possessing, producing, or introducing nuclear weapons into its territory.
Speaking at a seminar in Tokyo, Koizumi cited growing security threats from Russia and China as reasons to reconsider the policy. He emphasized the need for a discussion without taboos as the government prepares to update its three key national security documents by the end of the year.
In addition to the nuclear weapons debate, Koizumi expressed support for discussing the acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines to enhance fleet endurance and modernization. While proponents view this as a non-weapons upgrade, critics note the technical overlap between nuclear propulsion and broader atomic capabilities. The remarks have faced opposition from peace activists and organizations representing survivors of atomic bombings.
