Japan Defense Minister welcomes surge in university research applications

Japan Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi announced that applications for the Security Technology Research Promotion Program, often referred to as ‘Defense Ministry Funding,’ have reached a record high. For the 2026 fiscal year, the program received 560 applications, the highest since its inception in 2015.

Applications from universities and academic institutions saw a significant increase, totaling 291 cases. This figure is more than double the previous year and approximately seven times the amount seen two years ago. Out of the 47 research projects selected for funding, 30 were awarded to universities and academic institutions, including Osaka University, Nagoya University, and Keio University, which are receiving funding for the first time.

Minister Koizumi noted that the attitude of the academic community toward defense research has clearly changed. He emphasized that in an era where the distinction between civilian and defense technologies is blurring, collaboration with academia is essential for national security. The program supports basic research in fields such as AI, quantum technology, materials, and energy. For the 2026 fiscal year, medical and bioengineering research—specifically targeting trauma care and PTSD countermeasures—has been added to the research themes.
