Japan demands China show respect to Prime Minister Takaichi
Japan has formally requested that China show ‘appropriate respect’ to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi following a breach of diplomatic protocol. The dispute arose after Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun referred to the Japanese leader only by her name, omitting her official title, during a press conference on September 30.
Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Toshihiro Kitamura stated that Tokyo has relayed its concerns to Beijing, noting that international protocol dictates respect for foreign leaders even when positions differ. The incident occurred while the Chinese spokesperson was discussing Japanese debates regarding the potential acquisition of nuclear weapons and nuclear-powered submarines.
This protocol dispute occurs amid heightened tensions between the two nations. Relations have been strained since 2025, following statements by Takaichi suggesting that Tokyo might intervene in the event of an attack on Taiwan. Despite these frictions, Takaichi recently referred to Beijing as an ‘important neighbor’ and expressed a commitment to maintaining a stable relationship.
