Japan department stores launch sales to combat rising costs

Department stores in Japan are launching discount campaigns to support household budgets following the Obon holiday period. At Daimaru Tokyo, a ‘midsummer 1,000-yen sale’ has commenced, offering high-quality bento boxes and side dishes, such as chirashi sushi and fried scallop sets, at a flat rate of 1,000 yen.

This trend reflects a growing consumer shift toward ‘smart shopping’ due to rising prices. A survey regarding summer spending habits revealed that 66.1% of respondents wish to enjoy the season while remaining conscious of saving money, and 70.2% intend to utilize campaigns, coupons, and points to manage expenses. Department stores are leveraging these sales to attract customers during a period when household finances are often strained.
