Japan deploys military assets to assist Indonesia with forest fire relief

Japan has deployed military assets to West Kalimantan, Indonesia, to assist in combating forest and land fires (Karhutla). The deployment includes the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) vessel JS Kunisaki, which utilized Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) hovercraft to transport equipment and vehicles to the Karimunting coast.

Among the deployed logistics are three CH-47 Chinook helicopters equipped for firefighting and the Toyota Type 73 Chugata, a 4x4 tactical medium truck used to enhance mobility for forest fire response teams. The Type 73 Chugata is a 1.5-ton vehicle designed for personnel transport and operating in difficult terrain.

Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin inspected the Japanese assets in Mempawah to ensure operational readiness. He expressed appreciation to Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi for the rapid response. The Japanese equipment has been integrated into a joint task force with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to improve firefighting efficiency.
