Japan deploys new cooling technologies to combat extreme urban heat

As extreme heat persists in Japan, new technologies and services are emerging to mitigate urban temperatures and prevent heatstroke. In Osaka, where temperatures recently reached 38.6 degrees Celsius, companies are testing advanced cooling solutions.

Science Co., Ltd. is piloting a ‘non-wetting mist’ in the Dotonbori area. Using fine bubble technology, the ultra-fine mist evaporates almost instantly to absorb heat without soaking clothing or skin. Additionally, SPACECOOL has introduced parasols made from radiative cooling materials that emit heat as infrared radiation into space, potentially reducing head temperature by approximately 6 degrees Celsius.

Infrastructure for heat relief is also expanding through rental services and public initiatives. Nature Innovation Group has launched a project providing high-shading umbrellas at approximately 300 stations across the Kansai region. Meanwhile, local governments are designating ‘cooling shelters’ in public facilities and private businesses, allowing citizens to seek temporary refuge from the heat.
