Japan discusses constitutional changes to formalize military status

Japan's ruling coalition has reached an agreement to begin consultations regarding revisions to Article 9 of the Constitution, which currently renounces war and the maintenance of armed forces.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaiichi aims to reach a parliamentary agreement on a joint initiative by February 2027. The Liberal Democratic Party proposes maintaining the existing text of Article 9 while adding provisions to officially establish the legal status of the Japan Self-Defense Forces.

In contrast, the coalition's junior partner, the Party for Japan's Renewal, advocates for removing the second clause of the article, which prohibits the maintenance of land, sea, and air forces and other war potential. Instead, they propose enshrining the nation's right to maintain a national defense force within the Constitution.
