Kumamoto Earthquake in Japan Leaves 28 Dead and Hundreds of Thousands Displaced

A magnitude‑6.8 earthquake struck near Kumamoto, Japan on Tuesday, July 28. The disaster has killed 28 people, an increase from earlier reports of 23 fatalities. Around 250,000 residents have sought refuge in evacuation centres across the region.

The quake, measuring about 20 km south of Kumamoto city, prompted widespread damage and ongoing rescue efforts, with authorities urging continued caution as aftershocks continue.

Government spokesperson Minoru Kihara confirmed the death toll and the scale of the displacement, emphasizing the need for sustained support for the affected communities.
