Japan economy shows signs of recovery amid wage growth

Japan's economy is showing signs of increased robustness despite a high gross debt-to-GDP ratio of approximately 240% as of July. The economy grew by 1.4% in the second quarter on an annualized basis compared to the previous quarter.

Key indicators of this growth include a sustained increase in demand for bank loans, with growth rates exceeding 5% for five consecutive periods. Additionally, real wages rose by 2.4%, marking the strongest increase since 1997. This surge in wages is expected to boost private consumption, which accounts for roughly half of Japan's economic output.

The Bank of Japan (BoJ) faces pressure to act due to rising price pressures, with inflation reaching 1.9% in July, and the significant weakness of the yen. Following a rate hike in June to the highest level in over 30 years, there is speculation regarding a potential further interest rate increase of 0.25 percentage points to 1.25% scheduled for September 18.
