Japan Education Minister addresses school toilet gender disparity

Japan's Minister of Education, Yohei Matsumoto, addressed concerns regarding the shortage of female toilets in schools during a press conference. While stating that Ministry hearings have not confirmed that toilet congestion is significantly impacting learning, he acknowledged that some schools face crowding due to a concentration of use in Western-style toilets over traditional Japanese-style ones.

Reports indicate a significant disparity in facility design, with a survey of public elementary and junior high schools across 72 municipalities finding that the number of male toilets is approximately 1.4 times higher than female toilets. This discrepancy is attributed to historical design standards and the space-efficient nature of urinals.

The Society of Air-Conditioning and Sanitary Engineers (SHASE) is currently considering revisions to the standards for the number of sanitary fixtures required in commercial facilities, workplaces, and schools. Experts note that while increasing female toilet capacity is necessary to reflect modern gender ratios, implementation is complicated by high costs associated with plumbing and structural renovations.
