Japan elderly care trends show shift toward professional services

A survey conducted by Duskin Co., Ltd. regarding elderly care in Japan reveals a shifting perspective on family roles. While the perception of caregiving as a significant mental and physical burden remains high, there is a statistically significant trend toward utilizing social services rather than relying solely on family members. Respondents increasingly favor early admission to care facilities, and over 92% believe in utilizing external care services. The study suggests that personal experience with caregiving reduces psychological barriers to professional help.

In Kyoto, local organizations including the Kyoto City Council of Elderly Welfare Facilities are launching the ‘Future Care Illustration Contest.’ Aimed at elementary and junior high school students, the contest invites creative ideas for a future where the elderly can live vibrantly and safely. Submissions can focus on ideal towns, shops, events, or future tools and vehicles. The project seeks to encourage younger generations to think about community support and the importance of elderly care.
