Japan elderly living costs: Average monthly expenditure reaches 161,435 yen

Based on 2025 data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the average monthly expenditure for single-person households aged 65 and older in Japan is approximately 161,435 yen. This figure includes 148,445 yen in consumption expenditures and 12,990 yen in non-consumption expenditures, such as taxes.

For individuals receiving a monthly pension of 150,000 yen, a monthly deficit of 11,435 yen occurs relative to the average cost of living. If an individual relies on this pension for 20 years (until age 85), they would require approximately 2,744,400 yen in savings to cover the gap. A person with only 2,000,000 yen in savings would face a projected shortfall of over 700,000 yen.

To mitigate these financial risks, experts suggest reviewing expenditures—specifically focusing on utilities, mobile phone plans, and unused subscriptions—and considering post-retirement employment through re-employment or part-time work. Utilizing specialized job search services for seniors is recommended to ensure long-term financial stability.
