Japan elderly savings decline for first time in six years

Average savings for unemployed households aged 65 and older in Japan have declined for the first time in six years. According to data, the average savings for these households in 2025 stood at 24.94 million yen, a decrease of 660,000 yen from the 25.60 million yen recorded in 2024.

Financial analysis indicates that unemployed couples face a monthly deficit of approximately 42,000 yen, as their expenditures of 296,829 yen exceed their actual income of 254,395 yen. While the total deficit is larger for couples, the per-person deficit is approximately 9,000 yen higher for single-person households compared to those living in pairs.
