Japan electricity prices to rise sharply in October
Japan is facing a significant surge in living costs as electricity prices are set to rise sharply starting October 1. Kansai Electric Power announced that electricity bills for a standard household will increase by more than 1,300 yen per month. Experts from the Energy Information Center describe this as an “unprecedented” increase, attributing the spike to rising fuel costs driven by international conflicts and the expiration of government subsidies.
The impact extends across various sectors. In the food industry, over 3,000 items are expected to see price increases, including the restaurant chain Torikizoku, which is raising its menu prices for the first time to the 400-yen range.
Agricultural producers are also struggling; rice farmers in Kobe reported that electricity costs during the autumn harvest season can be up to seven times higher than usual due to the continuous operation of drying machinery. Farmers indicate they may have no choice but to pass these rising operational costs on to consumers.
