Japan equalises late to draw 2‑2 with Netherlands in World Cup group match
Japan secured a 2‑2 draw against the Netherlands in the opening match of Group E at the FIFA World Cup. The Netherlands took an early lead when Fan Daik headed the ball in the 51st minute, and Samervil restored their advantage to 2‑1 later in the first half. Japan responded with a volley from Nakamura in the 57th minute and a further equaliser in the 64th minute.
In the 89th minute, a corner swing by Ogawa was redirected to Kamat, whose opportunistic finish levelled the score. The late goal denied the Dutch side a win and kept their unbeaten record in World Cup group‑stage open since 1938. Both teams exchanged chances in the closing minutes, but the match ended in a stalemate.
The result leaves both sides with one point each as the group stage continues.
