Japan equity ETFs see $12.3bn inflow from European investors
European investors have directed $12.3 billion into unhedged Japanese equity ETFs this year, representing 82% of the total net inflows into Japan-focused UCITS ETFs through August. This surge has driven total assets in Japanese equity ETFs to a record $84.8 billion. The shift toward unhedged products suggests a changing attitude toward the yen, as investors move away from currency-hedged funds to gain direct exposure to currency fluctuations.
Simultaneously, Japanese asset managers, including large life insurers managing approximately $2.5 trillion, are monitoring domestic bond yields. As 10-year Japanese government bond (JGB) yields have risen above 3% for the first time in three decades, some firms are cautiously increasing exposure to domestic bonds. While a massive repatriation of overseas capital is not currently seen as a definitive trend, analysts suggest that consistent flows back into domestic assets could provide support for the yen as the Bank of Japan adjusts its monetary policy.
