Japan: Essential administrative procedures following employment termination

Upon resigning from a job in Japan, individuals must manage several administrative transitions, often within tight deadlines. Key procedures include switching health insurance and pension coverage. National Health Insurance typically requires notification within 14 days, while applying for voluntary continued coverage through an employer's association must generally be done within 20 days of the resignation date.

Regarding pensions, those aged 20 to 60 must generally complete procedures to join the National Pension as Category 1 insured persons within 14 days of leaving their job. For unemployment benefits, individuals should present their separation notices to Hello Work to begin the application process. While benefits are generally available for one year from the day after resignation, an extension of up to one year can be requested within two months if the individual wishes to take a break before seeking new employment.

Resident tax obligations depend on the timing of the resignation. If leaving between January 1 and April 30, remaining taxes are often deducted from the final salary or severance pay; otherwise, taxpayers may receive a notice to pay later. Additionally, since mid-year retirees cannot undergo year-end tax adjustments through an employer, they may need to file a final tax return to claim refunds for overpaid income tax.
