Japan establishes new Minister for Bear Damage Countermeasures
The Takaichi Cabinet has established a new position, Minister for Bear Damage Countermeasures, as part of a recent cabinet reshuffle. Hiroyoshi Sasagawa, who also serves as the Minister of the Environment, will concurrently hold this new role.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara stated that the decision was driven by the increasing frequency of bear sightings and rising incidents of human injury. Kihara emphasized that the new minister will act as a central command hub to coordinate closely with relevant government agencies, prioritizing public safety and security.
During his inaugural press conference, Minister Sasagawa pledged to accelerate measures to protect lives and livelihoods by fostering inter-agency cooperation.
