Japan expands sustainable fashion initiatives through regional and national partnerships

Efforts to promote sustainable fashion and reduce textile waste are expanding in Japan through new public-private partnerships. The Sustainable Fashion Platform Council has announced cooperation with Ichikawa City in Chiba Prefecture. This collaboration aims to collect, reuse, and recycle discarded clothing to advance a circular textile economy. Fiber CDM, a member of the council, is considering establishing a new sorting plant in Ichikawa to support these efforts.

The council, which includes companies such as H2O Retailing, JR West SC Development, and Aoyama Trading, aims to process 37,500 tons of clothing annually nationwide by 2030.

In a related development, Nippon Wool Textile Co., Ltd. (Nikke) has joined the Ministry of the Environment’s ‘Sustainable Fashion Partner System.’ This initiative encourages collaboration between businesses, organizations, and local governments to foster values centered on treating clothing as a resource. Nikke continues its ‘WAONAS’ project, which utilizes unique technology to recycle wool-blend garments back into new yarn and clothing, facilitating a ‘clothing-to-clothing’ resource cycle.
