Japan experiences U-turn rush as Obon holiday concludes

As the Obon holiday period concludes, Japan is experiencing a significant U-turn rush. Major transportation hubs and rail lines are seeing heavy congestion as travelers return to urban centers.

In Shizuoka, the Tokaido Shinkansen reached peak congestion, with Hikari trains reporting occupancy rates of 150 percent. Similarly, Hokuriku Shinkansen services toward Tokyo saw many reserved seats fully booked. At Haneda Airport, approximately 39,000 international arrivals were expected as travelers returned from overseas holidays.

Regional activities also marked the end of the season. In Kumamoto, the character Kumamon resumed activities to encourage residents affected by recent earthquakes. In Tokyo, the Fukagawa Hachiman Festival concluded its three-year cycle, while traditional Buddhist ceremonies like the ‘Bonto Festival’ in Sendai were held to honor ancestors.
