Japan explores AI humanoid robots for defense and logistics

Japan is exploring the use of AI-equipped humanoid robots to support the Japan Self-Defense Forces (SDF). Due to personnel shortages, the government is considering these robots for non-combat roles, such as base patrols, logistics support, reconnaissance, and rescue operations. The government plans to initiate research and hold competitions for private companies and universities to demonstrate robotic capabilities.

Despite the potential benefits, Japanese officials have expressed caution regarding the use of AI in combat. Primary concerns include the risk of identification errors, where AI might misidentify friendly forces as enemies or mistake combatants for civilians.

In a related development in the robotics sector, GMO AI & Robotics Trading (GMO AIR) has introduced the ‘GMO Humanoid Ambulance.’ This specialized mobile workshop is designed to provide on-site maintenance and repairs for humanoid robots. The vehicle carries engineers, diagnostic tools, and spare parts to ensure that robot operations are not significantly interrupted by mechanical failures.
