Japan faces crisis as school refusal numbers exceed 350,000

Japan is facing a national crisis as the number of students refusing to attend school has exceeded 350,000, marking 12 consecutive years of increases. In Tokyo, the number of truant students has tripled over the last decade. This trend is particularly acute at the junior high school level, where over 80,000 students are absent from school.

Experts suggest the crisis stems from systemic issues rather than individual student failings. Key factors include a significant increase in curriculum volume compared to 50 years ago, a lack of diverse learning methods, and an educational model that relies heavily on rote memorization and external motivation. The current system often fails to accommodate different cognitive styles, effectively marginalizing students who do not fit the standard mold.

In response, community-based “third places” are emerging to support these children. Volunteer-run initiatives, such as the Edogawa Night Warmth School, provide personalized, one-on-one instruction and emotional support outside the formal school environment. Additionally, local businesses like traditional candy stores (dagashiya) serve as informal social hubs where children can find community and relief from academic pressure.
