Japan records historic late-October heat in Tokyo and Osaka
Tokyo and Osaka have experienced unprecedented temperatures for late October, with both cities recording temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), this marks the latest date such heat has been recorded in Tokyo since meteorological data collection began in 1875.
In Osaka, the temperature surpassed the 30-degree threshold, breaking a record that had stood since October 20, 1933. The JMA refers to days when temperatures reach or exceed 30 degrees Celsius as ‘manatsubi’, or ‘summer days’.
Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of such extreme weather events to human-induced climate change. This follows a record-breaking summer in 2025, during which temperatures in Isesaki reached 41.8 degrees Celsius.
