Japan faces growing experience gap for children due to economic hardship

Economic challenges and rising living costs are creating an ‘experience gap’ among children in Japan, particularly during summer vacations. Families facing financial difficulties or single-parent structures often struggle to afford leisure activities, which experts warn can impact a child’s future self-esteem, autonomy, and proactivity.

In Nantan City, Kyoto, Lawson organized a free day camp for approximately 40 participants from single-parent households to provide nature-based experiences. For many parents, such opportunities are rare due to the difficulty of balancing work and childcare.

Compounding these economic issues is extreme summer heat. A survey by Benesse indicated that over half of elementary school students are spending more time at home due to the heat. With limited affordable indoor facilities, the lack of diverse experiences is becoming an increasing social concern.
